Ashta Siddhis (supernatural powers) - From Srimad Bhagavatam

Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 11, Chapter 15 - Mystical Perfection: The Siddhis

Siddhi can be translated as perfection or accomplishment. All religions accept the phenomenon of supernatural powers.

Eight main powers (Ashta Siddhis) acquired by a spiritual person as listed in the scriptures are Aṇimā, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prāpti, Prākāmya, Iṣiṭva, Vaśitva. There are other lists of such powers too, however these are the most discussed yogic powers.

Ashta Siddhis (supernatural powers) are:

1. Animā:
Ability to reduce the size of the body, sometimes even to the size of the atoms.  ('Becoming smaller than the smallest' as described in Srimad Bhagavatam by Lord Krishna)
Example:
- Hanuman had reduced the size of his body while he was searching for Sita in Lanka.

2. Mahima:
Ability to assume a gigantic form ('Becoming larger than the largest' as described in Srimad Bhagavatam by Lord Krishna)
Example:
- Hanuman assumed a huge form to burn Lanka, he also assumed big form to fight Kumbha Karna
- In Vaamana avatar Lord Vishnu increased his form which was so gigantic that it only took him three steps to cover all three worlds

3. Garima
Ability to become very heavy in weight by will
Example:
- Hanuman made his tail very heavy that even Bhima couldn't lift it (Bhima who was climbing the GandhaMadana mountains to get Saugandhika flowers for Draupadi was stopped by a monkey whose tail was on the way, Bhima orders the monkey to take the tail off the road, monkey being old tells him to move it himself, but Bhima couldn't even lift the monkey's tail)

4. Laghima
Laghima comes from the word laghu, which means small or light. Laghima is the ability to make the body very light ('Becoming lighter than the lightest'). Levitation and flying in the air are its subsidiary powers

5. Praapti
Word praapti means 'to obtain', 'having obtained', 'to have got'. Thus praapti is the ability to acquire anything anywhere.

6. Praakaamya
The ability to obtain anything desired, ability to have realized the dreams

7. Isitva
Isa=lord; isitva=lordship; The power of absolute lordship over entire creation

8. Vashitva
The ability to have everything under control, especially the physical manifestation made up of five elements

Mention about Ashta Siddhis and  Nava Nidhis comes in Hanuman Chalisa also

Verse 31:
Ashta siddhi nava nidhi ke dātā, asa bara dīnha jānakī mātā

That means, Mother Sita granted you a boon to become the bestower of 8 Siddhis (supernatural powers) and 9 Nidhis (divine treasures)
Hanuman - Owner of Ashta Siddhi and Nav Nidhi

Guru’s Love to his Disciple - Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Haridas Thakur

Usually we have heard many stories about the students sacrifice or great offerings to their masters or guru’s. But here we have a story about the Guru who can do anything for his disciple.

Saint Haridas as we know he was a prominent Vaishnava saint who has spread the Hare Krishna movement. Saint Haridas was born as Muslim and then he became a great devotee of Krishna and converted himself as a Brahmana.

It is said that in his previous birth he was son of Richika Muni and Prahlad, and while Lord Krishna visit to their place saint haridas as son of Richika muni picked a tulasi leaf and offered it to Krishna without washing it, so his father cursed him to become a mleccha (non vaishnava) in his next birth.

Saint Haridas has to chant the name of Lord Krishna 3,000,000 times daily. As Hari Das Thakur grew old, it became difficult for him to maintain his vow of chanting 3,000,000 times every day. Seeing his pain Lord Krishna told him that he is his great disciple no need for him to show such attachment for devotional service in practice; he could thus reduce the number of Holy Names that he chanted every day. Hari Das then revealed what was really bothering him.

Saint Haridas knew that Lord Krishna would soon be ending his times in this world and he wished to leave before him. The affectionate Lord granted him his wish, even though Lord Krishna was not happy with the decision.

Saint Haridas Thakur sat in front of Lord Krishna and then, as the tears flowed from his eyes, he gazed at the Lord's face and took his feet on his chest and, while chanting the names "Krishna Chaitanya", voluntarily left his body like Bhishma.

When Saint Haridas gave up his body, Lord Krishna took “Biksha” in the market of Puri and collected money for the ‘Vijaya Yathra’ of his disciple. When other disciples wanted to bear the holy body of Haridas on their shoulders with great eager, Lord didn’t give them that opportunity and he alone carried the holy body of the very great Haridas to the ‘Rudra Bhoomi’. Lord Krishna’s love for Haridas is immeasurable.

Moral of the Story: Guru's Love is beyond of everything

Four Sampradayas or authorities on the science of Bhakti

The correct process of receiving knowledge in any field is approaching a bona fide institute. Similarly, transcendental knowledge should be received through a bona fide disciplic succession

In Bhagavad Gita 4.2, Lord Krishna says:
evam parampara-praptam
imam rajarsayo viduh
sa kaleneha mahata
yogo nastah parantapa

Translation: “This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost”

There are four sampradayas or authorities on the science of bhakti.

Sri Krishna Chaitanya is like a desire tree, and in the form of Narayana, He is the original guru of the four sampradayas.
Four Sampradaya - Four Disciplic Succession Acharayas
(A) Sri is the beloved of Narayana. She is His disciple as well. Her wonderful activities are elaborately described in all the Sastras. Sri is another name of Lakshmi. Her disciplic succession called the "Sri Sampradya" has unlimited branches and sub-branches. After Ramanuja became the acarya in this sampradaya it took the name Ramanuja-sampradaya. Ramanujacharya earlier known as Laksmanacharya is the author of the Ramanuja-bhashya.

(B) Lord Brahma is the leading disciple of the supreme Lord Narayana. His sampradaya is known as "Brahma Sampradaya" with disciples all over the world. In this sampradaya, Sri Madhva significantly contributed by writing a commentary on the Brahma-sutras. After this the sampradaya became known as the Madhva-sampradaya.

(C) The supreme Lord Narayana also has Lord Rudra as His disciple. Vishnusvami was a leading disciple in the "Rudra Sampradaya". Vishnusvami was very influential and a learned scholar of all the scriptures. After him this disciplic succession came to be known as the Vishnusvami-sampradaya.

(D) From the supreme Lord Narayana appeared the Hansa-avatara. In this disciplic succession came the four Kumaras headed by Sanaka Kumara. In this line Nimbaditya was a leading disciple in the "Kumara Sampradaya". The name Nimbaditya sampradaya was thus established. This is known also as Nimbarka-sampradaya. The influence of Nimbarka sampradaya spread all over the world.

The Sri, Brahma, Rudra, and Kumara sampradayas spread their influence by dividing into other sampradayas. In the Ramanuja-sampradaya, Sri Ramanandacharya was highly respected. He had many disciples and grand-disciples. Similarly Sri Vallabhacharya appeared in the Vishnusvami-sampradaya. He wrote a commentary named Anubhasya, which is highly respected. His disciplic succession is known as the Vallabha-sampradaya.

Iskcon Founder-Acarya His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada comes in the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya disciplic succession.
